Dell would love to offer Mac OS as an option given the chance by Apple
Maybe Steve Jobs was right. Switching to Intel opens up a lot of opportunities for them to provide real competition to the Microsoft as an Operating System maker. The company shocked the world when they announced plans to start using Intel built Microprocessors for the Macintosh computers. This is a major change in policy for the makers of Mac OS as they have denounced such rumors in the past.
Some online magazines considered the move as a potential challenge to the domination of Dell in the PC market as Macs are expected to become cheaper in the coming times due to the switch to Intel Processors. However, if the latest news in is to be believed, the move might include the support of Dell as a market player.
Dell CEO Michael Dell has reported told a media group that he might be tempted to switch over (in other words start offering alternatives to Microsoft Operating System) if given a chance. Dell has reportedly written in a mail to Fortune Magazine: “If Apple decides to open the Mac OS to others, we would be happy to offer it to our customers.â€
Dell currently prefers Windows Operating System as their default choice for the desktops shipped to the consumers. Linux and NetWare are also used on some of their server offerings. However, there is no real alternative to Windows OS to the end consumer as an Operating System. If Apple indeed allows Dell to port Mac OS to their computers, it would for the first time give them a real alternative to the current standard Windows XP.
Apple has for the time being not commented on any such possibility. In fact, Steve Jobs made it clear during the announcement that they would be blocking any attempts to run the Mac OS on non-Apple approved hardware. However, a potential deal with Dell is something, which might make them reconsider their decision to keep Mac OS to themselves.
