Many corporates are still on Windows 2000

Microsoft is preparing to end the support cycle for their Windows 2000 operating system at the end of this month.

Correction: They would no longer be responding to feature requests or design modifications of Windows 2000…

The reason behind this is that the company has put a lot of resources in ensuring the security in their prime offering in the Operating System market Windows XP. With service pack 2 for XP, Microsoft made sure that Windows XP remains their safest offering yet in the market.

However, there is a slight problem if we are to take the latest report from the AssetMetrix group seriously. Their studies have revealed that nearly half of business PCs are still running the older Windows 2000. Windows XP has generally grown inside companies, which have more of less moved onto latest version of OS Software from the company.

The reason behind lack of switchers to the latest versions from the company is quite simple. Windows 2000 when it was launched provided an excellent combination of both security and user interface. It combined the best features of Windows 98 and Windows NT. Users see Windows XP as mostly a bloated version of Windows 2000.

However, with support for this Operating System closing down and the company no longer releasing updates for this version… it is expected that most companies out their on Win2K would start updating to the Windows XP SP2 release. Unless they decide to wait for the Longhorn edition scheduled for launch sometime next year!

As the author of the study that you are referring to, I thought I would point out that Microsoft will still be supporting Windows 2000 until 2010. June 30th, 2005 marks the day that Microsoft will no longer respond to feature requests or design modifications of Windows 2000. Security fixes and technical support will still be available until 2010.
