Blu-Ray Disc supports get Sanyo in their side
HD-DVD supporting group gets another minor setback when Sanyo changed sides to actively support the rival group backing the Blu-Ray next generation DVD format. Sanyo is now an active member of the Blu-ray disc association, which settles the various aspects of the Blu-Ray DVDs being currently developed.
However, Sanyo has clarified that this step does not mean that they would not be releasing products supporting the HD-DVD format. These two groups are competing to set the standards for the future storage solutions based on the new generation DVD format. While Sony has already announced that they would be using Blu-Ray format as the media for their next generation PlayStation 3 gaming console, Toshiba actively declares that HD-DVD would mean a smoother transition to these large capacities disc from todays generic DVD Disks.
Both these formats use the Blue Lasers to record, read data, and offer much higher capacities than current generation DVDs. However, the basic concepts to develop them differ. At this moment, Blu-Ray discs have a minor storage capacity advantage over the HD-DVD drives. Sanyo was one of the three major companies backing the latter concept until now. Their shifting to rival camp would add to the woes of Toshiba.
This news comes out in the public much later as the company had already made a move over to the Blu-Ray camp on April 29!
