Microsoft completes the acquisition of Sybari Software

Microsoft deciding to enter the security application market is not a new story. They already have the Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta available in the market and the process of acquiring the Sybari Software Company was initiated quite sometime ago. The acquisition is now complete and Microsoft now fully owns the company.

However, the first step the company took after taking over Sybari Software was to announce the plans to discontinue with their UNIX and Linux versions of anti-virus applications. They would however be supporting all the engines of the antivirus applications working with Sybari’s server-based products.

The company provides updates to their anti-virus engines using signatures from other companies like Sophos, Computer Associates, and Kaspersky Labs. Microsoft would be bringing in additional technical expertise they gained on acquiring GeCad in 2003. They would no longer be offering the Antigen versions for Unix and Linux but would continue with the version for Lotus Notes.

Amy Roberts, director of product management in Microsoft’s security and technology business unit said in a statement about their forthcoming policy regarding existing Sybari Company products: “We will continue to support those products for the life of the contracts.”

This news also coincides with the beta testing launch of the OneCare online services from the company, which brings together a series of security services to the Microsoft Application users on PC Platform.
