Qantas Airways looking for a partner in the coming future
Qantas Airways Ltd. is the largest airline company in the Australia. Rumors have been floating in the market for sometime claiming that the company would be merged with a larger entity. However, the company representatives have cleared the doubts by saying that instead of a merger, the company is looking for alliance partners in the coming years.
Qantas chief executive Geoff Dixon suggested that the Australian government is not likely to see Qantas sold off to another airline. Instead, a possible alliance with two brands and dual listing is a better possibility. Dixon told Australian television in a statement: “Five years time, 10 years time. I think that we will be in some association with another carrier. I think that will become necessary.â€
Qantas is the only airline along with US based United Airlines to offer direct flights from Australia to the U.S. mainland. More airlines are looking towards getting access to this lucrative route. However, the Australian government is showing reluctance to give access to airlines like Virgin and Singapore Airlines.
New Zealand Commerce Commission had earlier rejected a possible deal between Qantas and Air New Zealand in 2003.
