AMD now has Athlon 64 FX-57 for hardcore gamers
AMD seems to be on steroids nowadays. Days after launching a 64-bit processor optimized for mobile computers, their latest product is aimed at gamers, and it is a single core Athlon 64-bit processor codenamed FX-57. This chip is now the prime offering from the company in their single core processor range and it sure is expensive at USD 1031 in quantities of 1000.
Market Experts say that it is fast and is an excellent choice for both gaming enthusiasts and power users alike. This processor runs at 2.8 GHz and is built using a 90-nanometer process for greater efficiency and lower manufacturing costs. It now supersedes Athlon 64 FX-55 as the best product on offer until now in the single core range.
Athlon 64 FX-57 comes with 1MB L2 cache and features a 2-GHz HyperTransport bus. It however lacks support for DDR2 memory. AMD users would need a BIOS upgrade to use this processor on their existing hardware. It supports all Athlon 64 board with the 939 socket. Companies like ABS, Alienware, Falcon Northwest, Polywell, Systemax, Voodoo PC etc are expected to soon launch computers featuring this high performance processor.
This seems like a perfect solution for anyone who can pay a premium for performance and does not need the features offered by the recently launched dual-core processors from the company.
