Sweden outlaws digital content piracy

Sweden has finally outlawed digital content piracy and as a result, downloading of copyrighted movies, games, and music from the Internet is now illegal in this European country. Sweden has said to have one of the highest online piracy rates in the world with around 10% of the net users actively trading files on the Internet.

However, the market experts have said that the law would make for little change as the net users are expected to continue their practices on the net. Before this law, Sweden was the only country in the European region to keep options open for their citizens. The law had to be established to bring Sweden in compliance with the EU directives.

They are also aiming to have a wider crackdown on net piracy. Antipiratbyran, a Swedish anti-piracy agency said in a statement: “There is nothing that indicates that (online users) would change their behavior. A law in itself changes nothing”. Before the law was enforced, only uploading copyrighted content was illegal under the law… Downloading was allowed. Now, downloading copy-protected content is also covered by law.
