Apple now aiming for half billion songs sold on iTunes

Apple has practically revolutionized the way people downloaded music on the Internet. The trend started with Napster, which enabled people to share music with each other using the p2p technology. It led to so much piracy on the internet that organizations like MPAA and RIAA had to intervene and get Napster practically closed down. However, other developer groups took over and Internet has become a hub for piracy of the digitally protected content.

Apple iTunes comes as a wave of fresh air in all this mess. The company sells more than a million songs legally on their webstore daily, which can be downloaded to one’s computer and transferred to their popular music player Apple iPod. The concept has taken the world by a storm. Apple iTunes is now said to be as popular as most p2p applications out there and Apple iPod is the largest selling digital music player in the world.

The company has now begun a countdown to half a billion songs sold on the iTunes Music Store. Few months back they announced that the iTunes had sold more than 250 million songs and reaching a target of 500 million songs should not be far off. The company is planning to give away an iPod mini and a 50-song iTunes gift card to the iTunes customer who purchases the winning song at each 100,000 interval. The person who downloads the 500 millionth songs will win 10 iPods of their choice, an iTunes gift card for 10,000 songs and an all-expense paid trip for four to see Coldplay on their world tour.

The company had started a similar campaign while targeting the 100 million mark on their iTunes.
