xMax to challenge WiMax?

A Florida based company has claimed inventing a technology, which might give WiMax a run for its money. The world is still stuck on wi-max while top tech companies like Intel investing heavily in WiMax. If the claim is true, it might revolutionize the way people use broadband on wireless. The company says that their technology uses low frequencies to extend the operating distance.

They call it xMax and it is a new modulation and encoding technology that allows the deployment of broadband services using lower frequency bands. The problem with the waves traveling on low frequency is that it loses its efficiency over longer distances. xMax handles that problem by being able to read one data bit per cycle and achieve something like current DSL speeds at relatively low frequencies.

xMax is said to have capabilities of powering connections up to 22 KMs away, which is a lot more than what WiMax is capable of doing in its current form. The technology is also claimed to be cost effective considering the high range of operation. Lower frequencies also mean that there is less dependency on line-of-site to get an optimum connection.

Joe Bobier is credited to inventing this new technology and he said in a statement: “xMax is trespassing radio frequencies, although trespassing is not the right word, because we’re allowed to transmit a signal if it doesn’t interfere with other, stronger signals.” With xMax, a city as large as London can be covered by just four base stations! However, a lot is needed to be done before it can be used in real world scenarios.
