Sprint Corporation offering high-speed wireless services

Sprint Corporation is now planning to target the emerging market of mobile computing customers who uses high-speed wireless services to connect their PDAs and Laptops to the Internet. The company believes that the fast-growing market for mobile data will offset falling phone call prices. Sprint would be facing competition from Verizon Wireless which is providing similar services in this market since quite sometime.

Verizon Wireless is a joint venture between Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group and they provide broadband cellular Internet services for laptops. Sprint would now be entering the same market with the targeting to emerge at the top of the market in the near future. The company would be charging USD 40 for downloads of up to 40 megabytes of data and USD 80 for unlimited usage.

Sprint plans to provide mobile broadband service to about 150 million people by early next year. They would be using the EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized) technology and would be targeting to service areas like business districts and airports in 34 markets by the end of this month.

John Polivka, a spokesperson for Sprint said in a statement about this new service from the company: “They (the competition, Verizon) certainly launched theirs first; there’s no denying that. We announced last June we would develop EV-DO by this point in time, and indeed, we have done so. We will have substantially closed the gap by the end of this year.”

Market analysts believe that in the early days, Verizon is likely to maintain its dominance due to its already existing user base and covered markets. However, in the coming months as the Sprint expands it range… only the quality and service would decided the company to come out at the top.
