AU Optronics to acquire patents from IBM

Taiwanese tech giant AU Optronics has added new stuff to its already vast range of flat panel related patents. In a latest deal with the US based IBM (International Business Machines), they acquire hundreds of IBM’s TFT-LCD related patents. This include approximately 170 U.S. patents as well as counterpart patents in Japan, Korea and Taiwan and many other countries will be transferred to AU Optronics.

Some of the key patents are related to technologies include TFT array process, cell process, such as one-drop fill technology; RBG color filter; and backlight and TFT driving circuits. IBM has not been manufacturing TFT monitors since many years now and just recently sold its PC manufacturing unit to Chinese tech giant Lenovo.

With this deal, AU Optronics would be boosting their presence in the TFT market with a range of products making use of these new-patented technologies. AU Optronics President HB Chen said in a statement: It not only elevates the company’s intellectual property position, but also helps us to preserve the interest of our customers.”

None of the companies released the financial details of this agreement.
