Lenovo launches PCs based on 64-bit AMD Sempron processor
Chinese tech giant Lenovo has launched their first PCs running the AMD’s Sempron processors capable of running 64-bit applications. The Sempron range of processors was designed by AMD to take on Intel’s Celeron processors in the budget PC segment in the market. Lenovo happens to be the biggest PC manufacturer in the Chinese market and made news when they took over the PC manufacturing division of the US based IBM.
AMD Sempron processors though are cheap but give good value to the end customer. The latest models come with 64-bit processing including support of up to 512k total high-performance cache, advanced 333 MHz front-side bus, AMD’s 3DNow! Graphics and integrated memory controller. As a result, PCs running this processor can run the recently launched Microsoft Windows XP 64-bit Operating System providing optimum efficiency.
There are few applications out in the market, which comes in the 64-bit version. However, as the processor becomes more widespread, more and more software companies are expected to follow through. The 64-bit processors of course are backward compatible and would run any application designed for the general 32-bit processors. AMD has their Sempron range of processors available in 2600+, 2800+, 3000+, 3100+, and 3300+ versions.
