Northwest Mechanics on Strike
Northwest Airlines has got problems on their hand. Their mechanics have authorized their union leader to call a strike. The reason behind going on a strike is that the carrier is demanding unreasonable concessions from the workers. This news was confirmed by the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association. The decision to go to strike was pretty much acceptable by the workers as 92.4 percent of its members voted yes for the decision.
The airline companies in the United States are already in deep problems. Since 911, a lot has happened with decreasing air travel by the people of US and increasing fuel prices has not helped either. The airlines are asking their workers to compromise so as to keep the costs of flying their crafts low. Some of the airlines have already increased their ticket prices to counter the costs of running.
Northwest is seeking USD$1.1 billion in annual labor concessions from their workers. Stuart Klaskin with KKC Aviation Consulting in Miami said in a statement: “I think that it’s designed to put additional pressure on the company. Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised if they actually do strike. There’s a lot of discontent in the union membership there.”
AMFA National Director O.V. Delle-Femine said on the issue: “Our members have expressed their extreme frustration with Northwest’s unreasonable demands and refusal to take the negotiating process seriously. They have authorized me to call a strike at any time after the 30 day cooling-off period ends.”
