Google Orkut was being used for drug sales

Google entered the online social networking model unofficially with the launch of their Orkut service. The service has remained low key since quite sometime with no new information coming out of the search engine company. However, this latest would raise the issues related to monitoring of the activities going on in the Orkut community and how Google would control the misuse of it by the members of Orkut.

The latest news in says that the Brazilian police arrested 10 people on Thursday accused of selling drugs using the Google’s Orkut. The website is very popular in the Latin American region and the arrested people were making use of that fact. A duty officer at the Drugs Enforcement Service in the city of Niteroi said in a statement: “We discovered the drug ring first via authorized phone tapping and later the investigation included monitoring of their activities on the Internet.”

The community allows web users to join the community after receiving an invite from an existing user. Some really creepy communities have also been discovered on the network though the service allows users to complain about activities they believe goes against the usage policies. We at TechWhack have unpleasant personal experiences being members of some discussion forums with members being abusive and impolite. However, it has continued to be a favorite of the user community.

Brazil happens to have one of the biggest user base in the Google’s Orkut communities, which was initially developed by a Google software engineer named Orkut Buyukkokten.
