EMC launches Symmetrix DMX-3 storage system

In an attempt to compete with global giants like IBM and Hitachi in storage media solutions, EMC revealed their latest product range today. This new system called Symmetrix DMX-3 nearly quadruple the capacity of its most advanced systems. It has the capabilities of storing up to 288 terabytes of data on 960 disk drives. This is an improvement from the 560-disk-drive capacity of their existing best solutions for the market.

By this rate of improvement, the company believes that by next year, consumers would have the products available in the market with capabilities of storing up to one petabyte of data on more than 2,000 disk drives on a single system. This amount of storage capacity is enough to store 250 million digital music files or 2 trillion telephone transaction records.

EMC would be making available this product in the retail market by September this year and would be targeting companies with the largest storage requirements in the world. Some of the potential customers for these storage solutions are banks, phone companies, and airline reservation systems. Tom Joyce, vice president of storage platforms marketing at EMC said in a statement: “It’s a response to cost pressure on these companies. The bar is higher, and budgets are not.”
