IBM launches new mainframes with double the performance of z990
International Business Machines (IBM) has announced the launch of new mainframe computers, which offer double the power, memory, and capacity of its z990 ancestor. In addition, they also launched its second iteration of its Virtualization Engine and proposed the creation of the Blade.org group.
The mainframe offers as many as 54 processors in one box and has the capability to process as many as one billion transactions in a day. The core of the computer contains a multichip module (MCM) semiconductor, which contains 16 chips. The size of the machine is comparable to the earlier model but offers almost double the performance and capabilities of z990.
However, IBM is touting this new product for its security features more. It comes with a new cryptography feature and improved hashing algorithm allows users to encrypt and transport data to customers, partners, and suppliers. It would be making use of Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to enable 6,000 secure online handshakes per second, three times as many as the z990.
All these efforts are to reduce the amount of data leakage, which is quite common in the current generation mainframe solutions. Bill Zeitler, senior vice president of IBM’s Systems and Technology Group said in a statement during the launch: “The reason interest in mainframes have been growing is their ability to run workloads like [Linux].â€
