Phil Zimmermann introduces secured VoIP

Phil Zimmermann is the author of the Pretty Good Privacy encryption technology that works with E-Mail. Now, he is working towards making VoIP conversations secure and has demonstrated a new encryption software to secure voice over IP connections. He was addressing the media and crowd at the Black Hat Briefings get-together for network security professionals in Las Vegas where he showcased his session-based Zfone encryption tool.

The application lets two users on a Session Initiation Protocol-based VoIP connection and verify the connections to prevent any kind snooping between the two clients. He showed the working demo on an Apple Mac running the open source, cross-platform Softphone and the Diffie-Hellman key agreement protocol.

Phil also clarified that he received funding for this project from VoIP pioneer Jeff Pulver and former White House terrorism advisor Richard Clarke. He also said that the project received technical help from PGP Corp. now, he is looking forward to raise venture capital funding to speed development of the project as VoIP is expected to become a huge industry in the coming times.

He also said that a windows version would be required to make the venure profitable considering the Operating System runs on more than 90% desktops around the world with most corporates on that platform. He also plans to publish detailed paper detailing the encryption protocol by the end of August and release the source code for Zfone for peer review.
