AMD considering releasing a cheap Athlon 64 X2
Microprocessor maker and the top challenger to the domination of Intel, AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) has announced plans to launch a cheaper variant of their Athlon 64 X2 architecture based processors for desktop computers. The processor is quite capable and has won rave reviews from the hardware testers around the world. However, the original variant has been quite unaffordable for the mass computer users and now AMD would be aiming to tap this market.
The company has now extended its line of Athlon 64 X2 processors with the 3800+. the range already consists of high performance processors like 4200+, 4400+, 4600+ and 4800+ versions and analysts believe that the company should be soon rolling out a 4000+ version as well. The Athlon 64 X2 3800+ will be clocked at 2.0GHz and comes with a 512KB of L2 cache on each core – totaling to 1MB.
This processor is also based on the same core that is used for the 4200+ and 4600+. It is not available market yet and AMD has not announced a launch date until now. However, market sources say that it should cost somewhere near the $370 price tag. This month should see the launch of this low cost high performance processor from AMD as they look forward towards taking away the initiative from Intel in the 64-bit processor segment.

Finally! A AMD X2 that I [could] afford! AMD has done a really good job with their dual-core processors, and has really designed them really elegantly, and the rewards of sales they’re getting is well deserved!
