NASA says Astronauts to fix Discovery Space Shuttle
American Space Agency NASA has said that the Astronauts on board the International Space Station would be fixing the Discovery Space Shuttle. The astronauts also said that the fixes are important and risky to do but would be a simple procedure. Steve Robinson would be the man who would be making history to do so by doing a space walk.
He would be trying to remove two loose fiber strips sticking out from between the crucial heat-resistant tiles. Robinson said during a news conference from space: “Like most kinds of repairs, it’s conceptually very simple, but it has to be done very, very carefully.†This is a very crucial mission for NASA, as they have to prove that they can still make successful journeys to space after the Columbia incident in 2003.
Robinson has already made two spacewalks on the mission and would now become the first man ever to try to venture out to the belly of an orbiting spacecraft. The fixes are important because NASA thinks that the protruding strips can be dangerous for the shuttle while returning back to the planet. Australia’s Andy Thomas added about this mission: “I think a number of us, we did have some misgivings. We were concerned about the implications of it and what was motivating it.â€
Discovery is currently docked to the International Space Station and orbiting 220 miles above the earth.
