Boeing, Intel to bring Wi-Fi to air travel

Boeing is collaborating with Intel through their business unit Connexion by Boeing to bring wifi connectivity to their passengers while traveling from one place to another. The companies have said that they have completed the tests and formalities to provide high-speed wireless Internet connectivity on airplanes powered by Boeing. Travelers would have to use Intel Centrino technology powered laptops to make use of this facility.

The Wi-Fi service is already available on around 70 airplanes and 100 daily routes worldwide. Some of the airlines offering the service being Lufthansa Airlines, Scandinavian Airlines, Japan Airlines, ANA, Singapore Airlines, and China Airlines. Austrian Airlines, Korean Air, El Al, Asiana, and Etihad are the other names planning to launch these services soon.

This is also the first time that these two major companies in their respective fields are coming together to form a business relationship. It would include the addition of Intel’s Wireless Verification Program to the partnership. Intel already service around 103 service providers in 70,000 hot spots worldwide.

The business travelers can make use of this service by using their established accounts with Connexion by Boeing or using their roaming profiles with their own wireless Internet services. This generally cost around $29.95 for unlimited access on an international flight, or $19.95 for access on flights lasting fewer than six hours.
