PDA market touching new heights

PDA Market is touching new heights with the new advancement in technologies like wireless connectivity and new features. Even the prices have gone down massively in the last couple of months, which has renewed the interest in these small screen devices. The growth is such that the market analysts believe that this current year should bypass the record sales the market saw in 2001.

As per market reports, worldwide shipments of personal digital assistants totaled 3.6 million units in the last three months alone. This is a growth of more than 30% when compared to the last year. The total sale for the year is expected to touch around 15 million units. 2001 saw the market touch a record sales figure of 13.1 million. Windows CE is also being seen as the Operating System of choice for the business warriors.

The software developed by the Microsoft Corporation powered around 46 percent of worldwide shipments. Research in Motion was second with around 23.2 percent of the PDA software shipped. PalmOne is the loser with just 18.8% market share in the last three quarter sales figures. The figures were released by the popular analyst firm Gartner.

Gartner analyst Todd Kort said in a statement: “Wireless PDAs are increasingly seen as an adjunct or alternative to notebook computers, while favorable exchange rates have enabled more Europeans to purchase PDAs at an attractive price.” The agency as usual did not count the sales of Treo 650 and BlackBerry 7100, in the released figures, as they do not consider these handheld devices as PDAs.
