Intel to move to a new chip architecture
Microprocessor giant Intel has admitted that the current generation microprocessor technology has gone old and they would have to switch to a completely new architecture soon. They are now planning to soon unveil a new semiconductor architecture designed for energy efficiency and the processors built on this platform are expected to make an entry into the retail segment sometime next year.
The company is expected to make this announcement as part of a semiannual conference Intel holds for the software and hardware engineers who work on the company’s chips. This three-day show is expected to be attended by around 4000 people. The event is officially known as the Intel Developer Forum and is scheduled for San Francisco from Aug. 23 to 25.
Intel’s new technological platform would come with support for multiple processing cores and a host of technology advancements as per the statement made by company spokesman Bill Calder. CEO Paul Otellini is expected to make this announcement during his keynote speech on the first day of the forum.
This meeting is also expected to see announcement from the company regarding the next-generation Centrino platform, expected in early 2006, and updates to Intel’s plans for home-entertainment PCs.
