Talks break down between Toshiba and Sony over next generation DVD Format

In a news which could cost big to the end consumer, the talks between the two industry groups developing their own formats of DVDs for the next generation data storage has broken down. Toshiba heads the group, which is developing the HD DVD format while Sony has developed the Blu-Ray format of DVD. While the former promises an easy upgradeability for the current generation consumers, Sony promises better storage capacities.

Both these groups had initiated discussions on settling for a common format earlier this year. However, the latest news in claims that the talks have now fallen apart and the groups plans to follow their own paths in developing the DVD technologies. Entertainment industry giants are divided between these two groups as no clear winner is emerging. The official word from the Sony group is that the talks have indeed been stalled but they have still not given up on a solution for the problem.

Andy Parsons, a Blu-ray spokesman said in a statement: “We are hopeful that we can still find a resolution. We still have time to find a way to avoid having two formats go to market, which isn’t good for consumers or us.” If this continues in the coming times, it would become difficult for a consumer to adapt one of these technologies, as the most products in the market will not be supporting both the formats.

In the end, both these groups along with the end consumer would be the loser of the situation.
