Intel launches Viiv technology for home entertainment PCs
Intel is the world’s largest maker of microprocessors. They also dominate the market for processors for mobile computers with their Centrino range of chips. Now, they are aiming for the media center PCs and the entertainment consoles for the homes with the newly announced range of processors called Viiv.
The products featuring the “Intel Viiv” sticker would feature the specially designed Intel Processors with other Intel hardware and software applications. The PCs and other products with this technology are expected to come out in the market sometime next year and would feature remote control. Don MacDonald, general manager of Intel Digital Home Group said in a statement: “Intel Viiv technology is our first platform designed from the ground up for the digital home.â€
A similar combination of various products under a single brand has already been successful for the company as they provide a similar package Centrino for mobile computers. The package consists of an energy-efficient processor, chip set, and wireless hardware. The launch saw a massive campaign from the company, which cost the company around USD 300 million and has brought big returns for the company.
It is not clear whether Intel would be marketing this new technology group as much as they did with Centrino looking at the small market of home entertainment consoles at the moment. Nor they have disclosed any interested PC makers in this market. Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition would be the desired Operating System for these products.
