Hitachi showcases one terabyte DVD recorder

Tech giant Hitachi has a small share in the DVD recorder market. They entered the market just last year and are said to have a 3% market share. They trail the market leaders Matsushita, Sony, and Toshiba by quite a bit. The company is not going offensive with a new range of products. Hitachi showed their technical ability by showcasing the world’s first hard disk drive/DVD recorder with storage capacities of 1 Terabyte.

This much storage capacity is enough to store 128 hours of high-definition digital broadcasting. If this product can reach a mass production level, it would bring a new level of storage solutions for the media players in the world. The other products in their new lineups would include models capable of storing 160 gigabytes, 250 gigabytes, and 500 gigabytes of data.

Hitachi plans to turn around their DVD players business from a loss-making unit to a highly profitable unit in the coming months. Norio Ogimoto, general manager of Hitachi’s storage media group said in a statement about their plans: “We entered the market last year and have only been able to grab about 3 percent of the market. It’s been hard to earn a decent return on investment with such volumes.”

They claim that their new products would allow the ability to simultaneously record two high-definition programs, which would allow them to lure the customers away from their competition.
