Intel would offer single core version of Yonah

Microprocessor giant Intel has announced their plans with the much talked about Yonah processors for notebooks. Earlier, this range of processors was only to be built in multi-core base. However, now the company has indicated that their would be a single-core version too. The company plans to release versions of the low-power processor after the dual-core Yonah launch in January 2006.

These processors are targeted at budget laptops and are not expected to be as powerful as their biggest cousins in the dual core processor segment. Consider them to be the Celeron range of processors for the Pentium 4 range of processors in the single core segment for mobile computers. Steve Smith, vice president of Intel’s digital enterprise group spoke about these processors at the Intel Developer Forum: “We expect single-core processors to exist for quite some time in our value-processor line.”

The fact that Intel would be launching a single core edition of the Yonah processor means that the company is not going to leave the budget segment mobile computing market as it look towards high performance dual core processors for the future. Market analysts believe that this two faced strategy would harm Intel in the long run as it is time to move on and leave the old technologies behind us.

AMD is moving fast with their efforts to develop newer products based on multi-core processors. They have provided enough competition to Intel to keep them on their toes and are likely to continue to do so in the future. In the end, it brings more choices to the end customer…
