Sirius Satellite Radio to launch radio storage device S50
Apple iPod would have a different kind of challenger now. Sirius Satellite Radio has announced that they would soon be launching a small portable device for its subscription radio service, which would have the capability to store 50 hours of music, news, and programs from Sirius channels. This would also help the company compete more efficiently with its bigger rivals like XM Satellite.
The device is expected to be quite small and would be the first one from the company, which can be used while on the move outside cars and trucks. These automotive users are the company’s biggest clients. XM Satellite already has a similar product, which has helped it expand its user base to even bigger levels.
S50 would be another example of technology convergence combining the powers of two different very popular mediums… radio and portable music players. Today, every other device is being converged with a music player to make it more usable like watches and mobile phones. S50 would be a part of that system, as it would let its users to transfer digital media from computers to it. However, S50 would not be able to work independently as it would be required to connect it to docking device that is not portable in order to receive signals.
That device would increase the costing of the S50 (reported to be costing around USD 360) by another USD 100. This would make it a much more expensive deal than XM Satellite’s MyFi.
