Sun Microsystems to launch AMD powered Server range Galaxy

Sun Microsystems Incorporation plans to launch a new range of computer servers named Galaxy. The launch is scheduled for September 12 and the company is interestingly using AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) based server processors from the Opteron range. The plan is to regain its market lead in the server market, which it is continuously losing to competitors like IBM and HP.

Andy Bechtolsheim, chief architect and senior vice president at Sun who returned to the company last year, has designed this latest range of server range. He also happens to be one of the founding fathers of the company. The company has released some details on these processors and said that they are using the dual-core Opteron processors.

Galaxy range of servers would also feature an eight-way system similar to competing IBM server systems. Hewlett-Packard and Dell have refused to launch these kinds of server products. Sun is planning to target their existing client base for this new range would recommend them to upgrade to AMD based products as they offer better performance and dissipates less heat.

Sun would also be looking forward to moving ahead of just selling server solutions and also offer software and services, which are more profitable in the longer run. Also in plans to offer solutions based on the number of users a company has instead of their traditional sales model.
