Sprint launches Sprint PPC-6700 running Windows Mobile 5.0

Mobile service provider Sprint has launched Pocket PC phones running the latest Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 in the USA. These are the first devices of their kind to be made available in the market in America. The product is the Sprint PPC-6700 and it is a CDMA handset with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It also features a 1.3 megapixel camera and EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized), Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities.

Rumors in the market claims that this device is being manufactured by Taiwanese ODM (original device manufacturer) HTC, based on that company’s Apache reference platform. The Sprint PPC-6700 is powered by a 416 MHz Intel XScale PXA270 embedded processor and is expected to be powered by 64MB of RAM and 128MB of Flash memory.

The striking feature of this device is the unique, sliding QWERTY keyboard that opens from the side and automatically changes orientation from portrait to landscape viewing mode. The device also supports EV-DO high-speed wireless data protocol with claimed average download speeds of 400 to 700K bps and peak rates up to 2.0M bps.
