Sprint Phone might soon support Podcasts, Internet radio

Sprint is almost certain to enter a deal with the software company RealNetworks that would enable them to provide services like Podcasting and internet radio on their networks. The deal is expected to be finalized today and the confirmation should follow the meeting. The two companies plan to introduce Rhapsody Radio, the online music subscription service from RealNetworks on the Sprint’s mobile network.

This would allow the users using Sprint PCS Vision Multimedia Service to signup for this service for $6.95 a month and listen to several different radio stations or Internet podcasts. In addition, they also get access to videos, music news, or freestyle rap service “Beats N Breaks”. The details are not finalized yet and are yet to be confirmed in the media.

Such a deal would benefit both the companies as RealNetworks gets wider audience for their subscription service and Sprint add more value add-ons to their network of mobile services. Kevin Nakao, RealNetworks’ general manager of mobile said in a statement: “A mobile device for the youth generation is like instant messaging and the PC for Gen X and Gen Y.”

Rhapsody Radio service from RealNetworks features five radio stations: alternative, country, popular hits, urban and 70s music. In addition, they also have podcasts like ‘Morning Becomes Eclectic’ and ‘Le Show’.
