Google collaborating with NASA!
Search engine giant Google has now collaborated with the American space agency NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and they would together be working on space research. Google would also be building a new campus at the agency’s research center in the heart of Silicon Valley. Both of these entities plans to cooperate on research projects such as large-scale data management, nanotechnology, massively distributed computing and the entrepreneurial space industry.
This project would be making use of the internet and thousands of hours of unused computing power of the computers connected to the net to work on large-scale research projects such as health or space exploration. The company expects that volunteers would help with their computers when they are not being used. Such a large scale of online collaboration can easily beat functionality provided by a couple of supercomputers at fraction of a cost.
Google Chairman and Chief Executive Eric Schmidt spoke about their plans: “Google and NASA share a common desire — to bring a universe of information to people around the world. Imagine having a wide selection of images from the Apollo space mission at your fingertips whenever you want it.â€
NASA said in a statement that this collaboration would help the space agency a lot and Google would be developing around 1 million square feet of real estate within the NASA Research Park at Moffett Field for the project. However, financial details of the project were not disclosed by the two participating parties.
