Hyundai considering making diesel engines in India

India has become such an important market for the south Korean auto giant Hyundai that they are now considering manufacturing diesel engines here. With Maruti involved with Fiat in developing similar engines locally to help them sell diesel cars at affordable prices, it becomes important for Hyundai to prepare for the upcoming competition. Currently, only Tata has the affordable diesel car in the Indian market in the form of their Tata Indica model.

Fiat also makes Palio Diesel but has failed to generate much consumer interest. Maruti is expected to launch Suzuki Swift Diesel sometime next year powered by a CrDI engine. In fact, they are also rumored to be considering replacing the old Esteem model with a sedan based on the Swift platform. This could also be powered by the same engine range to compete with Hyundai Accent CrDi, which has been a smashing hit in the domestic market.

India is Asia’s forth-biggest auto market and is growing at a rapid pace. Hyundai Motor has earmarked investments of $500 million until 2008 for raising its share of India’s vehicle market to 25 percent by 2010. In addition, making diesel engines is an important part of that vision looking at the ever-rising prices of petrol in the local market.

Hyundai would be looking at offering their Getz and Santro models with diesel variants to counter any competition from Fiat and Maruti Suzuki.

I am really looking forward for Getz with CRDi and Santro with normal diesel or CRDi engine. This would be a perfect car for masses of India, as prices of petrol is sky-rocketing. Buying a petrol car at this stage would be really foolish if you belong to middle class family segement to which these B segement cars are targeted.

    Mr Hyundai,are you listening ?.
We(India) want Diesel variants of Santro and Getz….. Launch it before 2006 ends….

I am expecting Santro CRDi with a decent power and a good price before the year ends. I will rather wait for a few months before I finally decide to a for a new car.

I am a very loyal fan of Hyundai as I already have a Santro right from the time it was launched. As the prices of petrol have skyrocketed, i would like my new car to be diesel and that too Santro Diesel again!!!!

Waiting for diesel variants of Santro / Getz as the Petrol prices are picking up, but the pricing needs to be correct because Swift is already coming up with a Diesel / CRDi version, which will compete with Santro / Getz.

The new Hyundai small diesel car in Kia Picanto(guessing purely based on my reseach). Its 1.1L,75 BHP,CRDi car. I am sure it would be great success if priced amd marketed well by Hyundai.

Hyundai should also launch Getz CRDi as early as possible to be in the market share race in India. As you said lot of companies along with Maruthi are luanching 1.3 L Common rail deisel small cars in next 2 years.

Hyundai should have this New small 1.1 L CRDi and also Getz CRDi in thier portfolio in order to succeed. Hyundai India, follow my above stratgey for small car or you’d be gone in the race

Its high time that Hyundai launches the diesel versions of Getz & Santro which are perfect for Indian conditions & masses. But, pricing of the vehicles is the most important factor..too high prices will not attract much masses!
Hoping for the new variants & the launch :-)
