America Online cuts workforce by 700 workers

The hottest online property right now America Online has reportedly decided to trim down its workforce to cut costs and streamline its company’s internal strength. AOL is reportedly cutting down their workforce by around 700 workers with most of the jobs going from call centers. The company is reportedly losing a lot of its dial-up customers to high-speed broadband service providers.

One of the major decisions by the company is to close down its Orlando, Fla. call center and laying off the 450 employees that work there. More jobs are being cut in their centers in Jacksonville, Fla., Tucson, Ariz., and at its headquarters in Dulles, in northern Virginia. They also claim that they no longer require so many help personals considering users are getting more tech savvy.

The number of job cuts comes to around 4 percent of the Time Warner Inc. unit’s 20,000 employees worldwide. Interestingly, this news comes at a time when AOL is said to in talks with the three giants of the internet world Microsoft, Google and Yahoo! for a possible collaboration on digital content services.

This makes their ISP division less lucrative and the company would most likely concentrate on their web based services.
