Creative blames Apple for flash memory shortage
The deal between Apple and Samsung on the much in demand Flash memory storage has been in news since long. More so over the claimed super discounts Apple is supposed to be getting from the South Korean tech giant. Apple is said to be consuming more than 40% of all the capacities of Samsung’s flash memory production and the demand is only going to rise in the coming times.
While this enables the Macintosh maker to keep its supplies of iPod nano and other products stable in the market, the competition is not happy. In fact, tech giant Creative claims that the Apple deal has caused a shortage of flash memory chips in the market. And with the holiday season just arriving, the shortage is going to get more widespread causing a major problem for competitors like Creative and the likes.
Craig McHugh, US president of Creative said in a statement about their worries: “That will impact our one-gigabyte MP3 players in the holiday season because of the difficult and tight supply. Apple is applying pressure on the whole industry. The MP3 market is now consolidating: many Chinese manufacturers at the low end went out of business over the past six months and other Asian suppliers are getting out because it’s very hard to face this kind of pressure.â€
The shift from hard disk based players to flash memory disk players is only going to widen in the coming times for Apple and the problem for their competitors is only going to increase. It would be interesting to see how they cope up with the competition.
