Samsung to release Apple iTunes competitor

Samsung is South Korea’s dominating tech company and has been in news for their collaboration with Apple over sale of Flash memory chips, which Samsung produces and Apple is using in their iPod range of music players. However, the two companies are now coming closer to head to head competition in the online music sales market as Samsung is now planning to duplicate its dominance in memory chips to MP3 players by forging a digital media player application like iTunes of Apple Computer.

Samsung is already the world’s leader in manufacturing of flash memory modules and also makes a wide range of MP3 players. However, with lack of any directly supported online music store, they have not been very successful. Apple has yet not entered the South Korean market with their iTunes web store and Samsung would be aiming to take advantage of that fact.

Samsung president Choi Gee-sung, who is in charge of the firm’s digital media division said in a statement about their plans: “We are now in talks with our partners to debut a service program like iTunes of Apple. Our No. 1 priority is to help customers use our products with ease. Our items show healthy performances in China and Southeast Asian countries where iTunes services are not provided.”

It would be interesting to see how Samsung manages to compete against Apple on the online music sales front. It would become even more interesting if Apple decides to open their iTunes in this country.
