AMD dominates the retail PC segment beating Intel

AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) is already starting to show its improved performance in the server market. However, the segment where they have actually dominated over their bigger rivals Intel is the retail PCs and notebooks market. Intel however stays at the top in terms of revenues mostly due to their collaboration with big retailers like Dell and others.

AMD has sold more processors for computers sold in the retail markets. In fact, they also managed to overtake Intel in the overall PC sales when notebook sales are included for the month of October. Intel however has few reasons to worry about considering they lead the market in terms of revenues.

Dell is a major reason behind Intel’s success. Dell sells direct to customers and only uses Intel processors in its PCs. AMD’s unit share of the U.S. retail desktop market increased from 52% in September to 67.7% in October. However, Intel is expected to bounce back soon as the company is launching an updated range of processors for the desktop range of computers.

However, this holiday season is expected to be dominated by AMD powered Computers with Wal-mart announcing plans to offer a $398 notebook and $398 desktop from Hewlett-Packard that will utilize AMD processors.
