Toyota might setup a manufacturing unit in Bangalore
World’s second largest automaker and Japanese auto giant Toyota is likely to open their next manufacturing unit in India at Bangalore. However, this would take sometime considering such a plant would only come up by 2015. Rumors in the market suggest that the company believes that opening a new plant in India would be better if it is located near their existing facility at Bidadi.
They have for now ignored the North Indian region for locating their plant. The company board is expected to meet shortly to take a decision on the new location. A formal announcement about their decision should arrive after that meeting. We expect things to become more clear in the coming months.
Toyota has already said that they are aiming for sales of around 2.5 lakh units by 2010 and further increase it to six lakh units by 2015. After that, they could logistically think of moving their base to the north India for setting up another manufacturing unit to make cars. The company has already received clearance to set up a plant worth Rs 1,147 crores near the existing plant by the Karnataka government.
This plant is expected to have a capacity to produce 1.5 lakh compact cars and create around 2,600 jobs. Toyota has been approached by the Indian states like Haryana, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu inviting them to open their next unit on their land. However, they seem to be firm about their decision and an official statement from the company should put any doubts to rest.
