Tata Motors launches Daewoo HCVs in India

Daewoo might have disappeared from the Indian passenger car market after being taken over by General Motors; their heavy commercial vehicles are now being offered for sale by Tata Motors. The company on Monday rolled out the ‘Novus’ range of heavy commercial vehicles (HCV) from its manufacturing facility here. They are manufacturing these HCVs in collaboration with Tata Daewoo Commercial Vehicles Company of South Korea.

These heavy vehicles would be launched in the Indian market starting with tippers, followed by tractor-trailers, dumpers, and cargo vehicles. Tata Motors acquired the Daewoo Commercial Vehicles Company of Korea in 2004. These trucks have been modified for the Indian conditions. During the initial stages, the truck would have import content of around 75%. Tata would be working on localizing the product as the time passes by.

Managing Director of Tata Motors, Mr. Ravi Kant spoke about their plans with this unit to the media. He said that the new plant set up in Jamshedpur for manufacturing the Novus range was a part of the ongoing Rs 6,000 crores capital expenditure plan of Tata Motors Limited earmarked for the next five years. These vehicles are already being exported to countries such as New Zealand, Morocco, Ireland, and South Africa.
