Sony launches Instant Video Everywhere (IVE)
Entertainment giant Sony has launched a new service, which provides Skype like functionality by enabling users to contact each other through a free internet based system. However, unlike Skype, they are focusing more towards video conferencing between the two parties. They call it Sony IVE (Instant Video Everywhere).
This service relies upon a Windows based software application, which is available for download from the internet. Sony also plans to bundle this application along with their new line of Vaio BX laptops, which feature built-in video cameras. Looks like Sony is more targeting the Apple’s new iMacs computers, which comes equipped with iSight application and a camera.
The basic features of this service would be free. However, like Skype, they also have certain premium services on offer. These would let the users dial traditional wireline phones and cell phones from their computers. The package worth around $9.95 per month for the premium service includes a 10-digit phone number so IVE users can receive calls from regular and mobile phones.
