Richard Branson shows interest in Indian business sectors

The Chairman of the Virgin Group, Sir Richard Branson has expressed his keen desire to expand more into the Indian market. India is one of the fastest growing economies in Asia and Virgin has potential interests in various sectors like aviation, telecom, and hospitality. Branson was speaking at the Madhavrao Scindia Memorial Lecture where he said: “We would like to pick up a stake in Air Sahara if the current regulations allow. We will roll up our sleeves to get into the domestic aviation sector.”

On his previous trips to India as well, Sir Richard Branson has shown interests and claimed that he was willing to invest his personal funds in a domestic airline to circumvent current Indian laws. However, the Indian government policies are stopping him from doing much around here. Currently, foreign airlines are not allowed to either directly or indirectly invest in a domestic airline.

Branson is also interested in investing in the domestic airports. He is on a trip to India to discuss the potential in expanding their operations here. Despite the fact that Virgin group is involved in many sectors in their domestic market of Britain, they only have a minor presence in India through their airline company Virgin Atlantic. The airline operates a daily service from both Mumbai and Delhi to London.
