Holographic-memory discs to be out next year

while Sony and Toshiba are battling out to decide on the standards for the next generation DVD format, there is a new format of storage called Holographic memory discs which offers capacities much more than what these new formats promises us in a years time. Blu-Ray and HD DVD formats are currently under development by the two groups headed by Sony and Toshiba.

However, the holographic memory discs are about the size of an average DVDs and can hold as much as 60 times more data. These discs are expected to be available sometime next year. Holographic memory discs stores information through the interference of light – a technique known as holographic memory.

InPhase Technologies is currently involved in developing this new generation storage format and they promise storage capacities of 300 gigabytes of data. In addition, these discs support writing and reading speeds of up to 10 times faster than a normal DVD. They recently announced that they along with their partners Hitachi Maxell would start delivering the discs and compatible drives by the end of next year in the retail market.

Liz Murphy, of InPhase Technologies said in a statement: “Unlike other technologies, that record one data bit at a time, holography allows a million bits of data to be written and read in parallel with a single flash of light. This enables transfer rates significantly higher than current optical storage devices.”
