Texas Instruments introduces OMAPV2230, a new high-speed wireless chip
One of the world’s largest chip maker, Texas Instruments have announced the availability of a new wireless processor for mobile phones which they are targeting at the advanced mobile phones available in certain Asian countries like Japan and Korea. The chip is based on W-CDMA, which supports features such as mobile video, and Web.
TI has rivals like Qualcomm and Freescale Semiconductor also dominating the mobile market with their processors. TI has developed this latest processor in collaboration with Japan’s top mobile carrier, NTT DoCoMo Inc. This should further help them expand their reach in the Japanese market as NTT DoCoMo partners are expected to adopt this processor.
This latest processor from TI should also help reduce the price of advanced phones based on W-CDMA. TI Vice President Alain Mutricy said in a statement: “Overall, we estimate total handset cost savings can be anywhere between 10 to 30 percent.†This new processor is called OMAPV2230 and it also represents TI’s move beyond the custom W-CDMA chips.
Some of the interested mobile phone makers are Ericsson, Nokia, NEC, Panasonic, Sanyo, and Sony. TI has not confirmed any names but they have stated that manufacturers have already started developing products based on this new mobile processor.
