BMW to setup its manufacturing plant in Chennai
German automobile major BMW has finally decided where they want to establish their manufacturing plant for the Indian market. Chennai gets the company’s nod and BMW today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government. As per this MoU, BMW would be establishing its car assembly plant at an investment of Rs 180 crore in five years.
BMW is one of the most recognized automaker in the world and is one of the top German brands. They have an annual turnover of about Rs 2,19,240 crores and are mostly recognized for their premium luxury sedans. The company has selected a location in Mahindra World City in Maraimalainagar, near Chennai and they would be setting up their plant here.
The company said that they found Chennai was the ”best location” for their plant after they conducted a research on several locations including sites in other states of the country. The state government has assured the BMW Group that the State Government would extend continued support and co-operation to enable it to grow from strength to strength and wished the group all success in its Endeavour.
Chennai has grown to become a favorite destination for several automakers with two other auto majors - Ford and Hyundai - already have manufacturing facilities in this area.
