Skoda Auto India launches Skoda Laura

The India based subsidiary of the German Volkswagen group, Skoda Auto India has launched their new car Skoda Laura in the Indian market. The car is positioned in the upper premium luxury class segment and is based on the bigger A5 platform from the Volkswagen Company. The car is priced at Rs 16,81,081 (ex-showroom Delhi) and should give a competition to Mercedes C Class and other upper segment models from Toyota and Ford.

The company has also announced that they are going to raise the prices of their existing model range by around Rs. 30,000 from next month due to rising input costs of these cars. Skoda Auto India managing director Imran Hassen said: “The prices of 12 models from Skoda Auto India will go up by Rs 15,000-30,000 mainly because of increased freight costs.”

The hike would not be levied on this newly launched Skoda Laura model. Hassen added his views on the fabulous Skoda Laura: “It is a completely new car with progressive technologies and a number of sophisticated elements that have so far been used only in the upper premium luxury-class segment.” The car comes powered with an 1896-cc diesel engine.

The car is essentially an updated model of the current generation Skoda Octavia but considering the difference in prices of the two models, the company decided to sell them as separate models in the Indian market. This strategy has been pretty successful for Maruti Suzuki, which continues to sell Maruti Zen, Maruti Alto, and Maruti 800 together in the Indian market.

Skoda Laura

The company plans to launch two versions of its Octavia range sometime in the first quarter of the next year. They are aiming at sales of around 4,000 units of the Laura in the next 12 months. And the Skoda fans are waiting for the company to launch the fantastic Skoda Fabia in the Indian market.

Instead of launching the Fabia which would give them more sales the idiots at Skoda launch a car in the 16 lakh price range. The new Ocatavia (Laura) is a very nice car but they should have launched the Fabia first instead.

Though a beautiful car but price tag is a big problem. Difficult to give much competiotion to Accord, Sonata and other cars in this segment. Wishes to Skoda

i drove the laura and it is just a fantastic car loaded with tons of ammenities. the interior is very superior to that if accord and other competitors. the tiptronic is superb as well as the pumpe duse deisel engine. SIMPLY SUPERB. just the name is too shady. will definately wait for the SKODA LAURA rally sports version.

should have phased out the current octavia in the first place and
the so called “Laura”(sounds really dumb) should have been a replacement.Atleast should have withdrawn the L&k since its gona effect its sales bigtime. All the best Skoda!

When all the manufactures including Toyota and Honda are either giving huge discounts or reducing prices ,Skoda will have a natural death if they continue this “hike in price” policy. No older model will succeed in India again.Skoda people should launch the new 2006 model skoda fabia in India.

It is a blunder trying to position it against Accord and Camary rather than Corrola. How can they pit a 105 BHP car against 150+ BHPs. Their pricing is all wrong. They are doing the same blunder as Daewoo did when they launched matiz with initial price of 3.5 lac plus and such an excellent car bombed.

laura is good car yet if the skoda company could just reduce the price to 14-15 then i guess the laura could really sell and hit the charts yet i still feel that fabis should have been luanched first than this.

We are tired waiting for the Fabia. Skoda has been announcing dates and never stuck to it. We have now gone in for alternatives, and used up our budget. How long can a customer wait??? 2 years for a car to be launched. We feel cheated.

Laura looks good on specs but the style is too close to the older Octavia and Skoda ahs far too many models of the same thing. Lesser number of models should help in passing a message to the consumer that that the Manufacturer isnt just looking for catering to any and everyone. Indians do recognize technology !!

hi everyone.laura is really great.it has great features.but what matters me a lot is the price doesnt match the car.19lakh on road is really overreving.at 16 scoda rs is really a better car compared to laura.i am eagerly waiting for there much delayed fabia.

skoda laura is bettter than accord, sonata, even camry.but laura is too costly than these cars.If iam a bill gates i can buy some 14 laura’s a month.but i should ask my father to buy atleast 1 laura.

  18. Chethan S | April 18th, 2006 at 12:43 pm

Ofcourse skoda Laura is simply superb but price tag is little higher compared to the competitor same segment car.
Ya Laura is fully loaded but price is overloaded instead of 16 lakhs i feel 14 lakhs will make it preferable.

iam using skoda laura since 8 months and its a beautiful vehicle to drive.i feel tht its much better than accord.even though it has a higher price tag i feel it is worth and it is fully loaded with lot of features which accord doesnt have.automatic version is a pleasure to go with and styling is excellent.i think its the best car in this segment.
