Motorola showcases iRadio and other products
World’s second largest mobile phone manufacturer Motorola has revealed details on their plans to launch a new service called iRadio. iRadio is a subscription music service that the company plans to launch later this year. Along with it, Motorola also displayed other products, which consumers could link with cell phone and Web phone services.
These new products and offerings come at the time when most mobile companies and service providers are looking beyond their traditional product offerings like music and video downloading services. Motorola aims to become a major player in this segment as they plan to take on the market leaders in the segment Nokia.
The iRadio service would mean that Motorola would now enter the market dominated by players like XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. and Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. Both these companies sell products for homes and automobiles. Interestingly, Sirius is also in collaboration with Sprint Nextel and provides their radio services to their mobile customers.
Motorola would first provide the iRadio service along with their updated version of the Apple iTunes loaded Rokr mobile phone. Motorola Rokr E2 cell phone would not come with Apple iTunes application as Motorola aims to provide their own software solutions to let the consumer enjoy music download and subscription services on it.
Motorola has revealed that the iRadio service would include 435 commercial-free radio channels, including genres such as Heavy Metal, Rockin’ Cowboys, and Angry Women and it is expected to cost less than USD 10 a month.
