PSA Peugeot Citroën to launch Diesel Hybrids by 2010
Toyota and Honda have already excelled in creating hybrid cars based on gasoline engines. However, petrol engines are not the only ones, which would go hybrid in the coming days. PSA Peugeot Citroën has plans to launch diesel engine based hybrid cars in their targeted markets by 2010. The company for now is planning to showcase two demonstrator models for diesel-based hybrid cars.
These two models are based on the Peugeot 307 and Citroen C4 and are powered by hybrid diesel system, which helps to cut emissions and reduce fuel consumption. French President Jacques Chirac has also demanded that the French automakers develop the technology and launch such vehicles in the market soon to control emissions from the cars running on the roads.
Another advantage for countries like France would be the fact that they would be lessening their reliance on other countries for their fuel supplies. The fuel prices are escalating all over the world and it is becoming essential for nations to become self sufficient with their requirements.
It would be interesting to see how soon these cars could be made good enough for retail sales in the markets around the world. Toyota Prius and Honda Insight are two hybrid cars based on petrol engines and are already selling in huge numbers in the Japanese and American markets.
