TDK showcases 100 GB Blu-ray Disc

Tech giants TDK are showcasing some of their upcoming products based on Blu-ray technology at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. And this includes a prototype recordable Blu-ray Disc with 100GB capacity. This is perhaps the most advanced optical media ever developed and it doubles both the capacity and recording speed of the current Blu-ray Disc specification.

This disc theoretically can store approximately 9 hours of high definition video on a single side. And it records data at 72 megabits per second. This is impressively double the 36Mbps rate of the current Blu-ray Disc specification. Interestingly, the original Blu-Ray specification laid down by its supporting group allows for 25GB single layer Blu-ray Discs and 50GB dual layer Blu-ray Discs.

TDK had to incorporate four 25GB layers in this prototype disc to achieve 100 GB data storage capability. Bruce Youmans, TDK Vice President of Marketing said in a statement: “Blu-ray is changing the future of high definition digital recording and content distribution as well as proving to be the ideal, cost-effective, removable storage medium for large amounts of data.
