SemIndia to setup India’s first Assembly-Test-Mark-Pack
SemIndia has announced that they are setting up an Assembly-Test-Mark-Pack plant to initiate their plans to establish the first semiconductor manufacturing plant in the country. They are collaborating with the microprocessor giant AMD for this initiative. This facility is now expected to come online sometime this year itself and would be offering services to manufacturers of integrated circuits.
AMD itself would be using this unit to augment its regional assembly and test requirements. Both the companies revealed their grand plans to establish a microprocessor unit in the country in November 2005 and they would be spending close to $3 billion to build a chip fabrication factory in India during the next couple of years.
India already is home to several semiconductor-manufacturing giants like Intel, TI, and Infineon. However, we have always lacked a locally established manufacturing industry for such microprocessor chips. The project from SemIndia would change that scenario for the Indian market. Vinod Agarwal, chief executive of SemIndia said in a statement about their grand plans: “We will continue to work closely with AMD to establish a strong semiconductor ecosystem in the country.”
