Apple iPhone? Apple takes steps to trademark ‘Mobile Me’
The makers of Macintosh computers and iPod range of digital music/video players, Apple Computers have apparently filed for trademarking the term ‘Mobile Me’. The company plans to use it in a wide range of businesses. However, market experts believe that this is just another hint on their plans to launch a mobile phone capable of downloading and playing digital music or popularly conceptualized as the Apple iPhone.
American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu commented on this step taken by the company: “We believe this is further indication of (Apple’s) strategic direction to extend its iPod + iTunes and Mac franchises into new business areas including smart phones, value-added mobile content services, and the broader consumer electronics space.â€
Apple had sometime back launched a phone (Motorola ROKR) loaded with mobile version of Apple iTunes application in collaboration with Motorola. The two companies have apparently split up considering the lack of support Motorola was getting from Apple. Motorola now has plans to launch an upgraded model of Motorola Rokr without iTunes. They are also planning to incorporate their newly launched digital radio service iRadio in this phone.
Apple has not revealed their plans behind this action to trademark an interested term. However, it would be interesting to see how they go about using it to highlight their upcoming products.
