Boeing announces plans to layoff workers

US based airplane manufacturing giants Boeing have announced that they are laying off 84 employees from its integrated defense systems unit. The reason behind these layoffs is said to be the cut in government budget, which has lessened the requirement of work force in this unit.

Derek McLuckey, general manager of this Boeing unit added that they have to cut their workforce as the government policy changes have caused major shifts and reductions in some programs. They have plans to continue monitor the changes in government’s defense budget throughout 2006 to plan their future course of action.

Boeing would be giving 60-day layoff notices to these employees. This unit of the company has around 3,670 workers and work on engineering, design, and logistics services for U.S. military aircraft and international customers.

McLuckey added: “We are making adjustments in the first quarter of this year because of changes in our military support business. These changes have forced us to make this necessary decision to ensure our competitiveness. This is a situation that could have impact on our employment levels as the year progresses.”
